"Maharishi explains prana as the basic force of life that is responsible for all activity throughout the universe. In the context of the Yoga Sutra, it is the force that enlivens each of the eight limbs individually while keeping them bound together. In explaining this point he notes that just as prana enlivens the activity of each cell in the physiology while maintaining the connectedness and integration of all the cells, it likewise enlivens each of the eight limbs of yoga individually while keeping them bound in the state of Unity."   Maharishi says, 'Prana is the life force, the basic cause of all activity. It enlivens these eight different values of life, and then puts them together, as if harmonizing them. And in the collective form, prana makes them all breathe one breath of Unity, and that is unity of life.'   -- Sands, William Franklin, Ph.D., "Ashtanga Yoga In the Vedic Science of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi," based upon comments by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during a symposium at Humboldt State College, California in August 1971.
